Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare: First 2 Weeks to Protect Healing
By AZ Laser RX | July 10, 2026
Quick note on timing: Our Laser Tattoo Removal uses the fast Picoway Laser and the session is typically about 60 minutes. Aftercare starts the second you walk out the door.

The single most important rule after tattoo removal is simple: keep it clean, dry, and out of the sun for the first 48 hours. In Scottsdale, the sun is intense year-round and it can undo your hard work fast. Laser tattoo removal is an intense but quick treatment, and it’s normal to see redness, feel heat, and sometimes even get a blister as the ink particles are shattered. The goal for the first two weeks is to protect that healing skin so your body can do its job, and so your next session goes smoothly.
First 24 to 48 hours: keep it calm, clean, and covered
Right after laser tattoo removal, we generally recommend treating the area like a fresh irritation that needs protection, not like skin you should “scrub clean.” If we placed a dressing, leave it on as instructed. When it’s time to clean the area, wash gently with mild soap and lukewarm water, then pat dry. Rubbing is where people get into trouble.
Thin layer only: Apply a very thin layer of the recommended ointment. Too much ointment can keep the area overly moist and slow things down.
For the first couple of days, skip anything that heats the skin up or soaks it. That means no baths, pools, hot tubs, or long steamy showers aimed directly at the treated spot. And keep workouts light. Heavy sweating can sting, irritate, and raise infection risk, especially if the skin is tender or starting to blister.
Also, keep your hands off it. If you get itching, that’s common. Scratching is what turns “normal healing” into a problem.
Days 3 to 7 in North Scottsdale: sweat, sun, and scabs are the big traps
By day three, most people feel “fine, ” which is exactly when they start pushing it. Scottsdale heat and summer monsoon humidity can make you sweat more than you think, even on a quick errand or a short walk. If you hike around McDowell Mountain Ranch or you’re out on the golf course near Grayhawk, plan your first week like this: cover the area, avoid peak sun, and don’t let it soak.
If you blister or scab, do less, not more
A blister or scab can happen after laser tattoo removal. Don’t pick, peel, or “help it along.” Let it fall away on its own. Picking is one of the fastest ways to leave a mark behind and raise the chance of infection.
Sun exposure is the easiest mistake to make
UV is a big deal for healing skin. It can increase irritation and also make pigment issues more likely. If you have a big outdoor event coming up in Scottsdale, it’s usually smarter to schedule treatments so you’re not fighting the sun during your first two weeks.
Aftercare products that make healing easier (and what to skip)
Keep your routine simple. Clean hands, mild soap, lukewarm water, and the ointment we recommend. That’s the core. You don’t need a stack of products and you definitely don’t need anything “active” on healing skin.
Use
- A gentle cleanser (no fragrance if possible)
- A thin layer of recommended ointment while it’s tender
- Loose, breathable clothing over the area if it rubs
Skip for now
- Scrubs, exfoliants, retinoids, acids, and harsh toners on the treated area
- Scented body lotions on irritated skin
- Occlusive layers so thick they keep the skin soggy
Once the skin has re-epithelialized, meaning it’s closed and no longer tender or weepy, start protecting it daily with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and physical coverage when you’re outside. In North Scottsdale, that “just for a few minutes” sun exposure adds up fast.
When to call us: what’s normal vs. what’s getting worse
Mild redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness are common right after laser tattoo removal. A blister can happen too. What we don’t want is a trend in the wrong direction. Reach out if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, fever, or anything that looks like it’s turning into an infection.
“They were so helpful and walked me through the treatment process and explained the process necessary to get to my skin care goals.”
– one of our long-time clients
That’s how we run things here. You’re not bothering us with a photo or a quick question. If something feels off, we’d rather see it early.
If you’re still planning your first appointment, our what to expect at your first laser tattoo removal visit guide answers the “how it feels, how long it takes, and what’s normal” questions. And if you want the bigger picture of what we do in the clinic, start with our laser tattoo removal services in Scottsdale.
Planning your next 2 weeks around Scottsdale sun and the Loop 101
If you commute in from Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Carefree, or Cave Creek, the Loop 101 makes it easy to get in and out. The part that takes planning is the sun exposure after you leave. Early-morning or late-afternoon appointments often make aftercare easier, especially if your week includes golf, hiking, or outdoor events.
Two-week checklist: keep it clean, keep it dry, don’t pick, avoid soaking and heavy sweat for 1 to 2 weeks, then add SPF 30+ once the skin is closed.
